9's With the game being played over 2 matches with the scores added together it was important that both side put in committed performances. The Predator’s started at a great a tempo and pressed Waterloo into their own half in early exchanges. With Ben Matthews playing a pivotal role in centre midfield he orchestrated a number of flowing passing moves which with more clinical finishing from the Predators strikers should have seen Glossop take the lead. Waterloo were determined that it would not be all one way and with physically strong players they carved out a number of chances which on another day if they had found the Glossop keeper, Alex Kempley, having an off day they may have taken a lead into the half-time break, but Alex’s having come back from a 2 week break showed it had done him good and made a number of quality saves to keep the score-line at 0 – 0. Going into the second half Glossop stepped up the tempo with Ben again being instrumental in creating chances for the forwards. It was from one of the chances that a corner was forced and an inswinging left-footed ball across to the back post saw Ben gets his just rewards in scoring directly from the set piece. The game finished strong but with no further goals to add Glossop took a slender lead into the second game 1 – 0. MOM went to Alex Kempley for a sound goalkeeping performance but Ben Matthews run him a close second with a determined performance. The Strikers has to be focused with only a 1 – 0 lead going into this game and it was clear from the early exchanges that they were nervous. A number of clearances in the penalty area had to be made to keep Glossop in the lead and it was from one of the long clearance that saw Joe Mahon run half the length of field 1 on 1 with the keeper only to pull his shot just wide of the far post. This was a turning point in the game and strong wing play from Nathan Jackson saw 4 great crosses into the penalty go begging. With the game still locked at 0 – 0 (1 – 0 aggregate) the game went into the second half on a knife edge, a change up front saw striking predator Cameron Evans come on and it took less than 2 minutes for Cam to make his mark. A long throw into the penalty area eventually saw the ball land at Cam’s feet a yard out, a quick swivel and shot saw the deadlock broken and Glossop go into an overall 2 – 0 . The strength and fitness of the strikers started to show through and the game was being played in the Waterloo half now. The 3rd goal of the tie came when following a well defended corner the ball fell back to Nathan who pushed the ball neatly into space to strike arguable the best shot of the season so far to find the bottom corner of the net. A strong defensive display by Brandon Gee and Aiden Lomas allowed Glossop a great platform to play football though the midfield and find plenty of creative chances down the ring wing. One of these moves broke down with a foul 20yrds out and from the set piece Nathan curled an unstoppable shot into the angle of bar and post to put the match out of reach for Waterloo. With the clock running down there was still time for the final strike again another neat turn and left footed strike saw Cam score his second of the game to round of a great 2nd half performance. MOM went to Nathan Jackson for a great all round performance and Cam Evans deserves a mention for a great 2nd half display with 2 great goals. Next up Marple Athletic in the Semi – Finals. VIVA GNEJ !!! The Predators took to the field first and with a change side the lessons learnt from the previous 2 – 9 defeat had clearly sunk in. The Pred’s matched Vulcans physically and better finishing may have seen them take the lead. The first goal came when a hopeful ball sent into the Glossop area was not defended and the Vulcans striker managed to connect with a header that found the top corner. The score line stayed at 0 – 1 going into the break and the Predator had shown that they could match the best league. The second half was played at a high tempo, the second and final goal of the game came when an challenged run finished with a neat finish pass Jake Nicoll. Jake had pulled off some magnificent saves and was rightly awarded the MOM trophy for his efforts. The Striker having gone down by 0 – 2 the week before knew that with the right attitude they could get a result in this match. The match transpired into a physical battle with some good passing football and the crowd was treated to a fantastic game of football. The first goal came a little fortuitously when a snap shot by Jacob O’Donnell was deflected on target and found it’s way into the bottom corner. 1 – 0 Glossop and Vulcans were entering into unknown territory having not been a goal down all season. Vulcans showed good character and following a neat passing move equalised to make it 1 – 1 at the halftime break. A positive half time team talk had obviously not sunk in with Glossop players and straight from kick off the ball should have been cleared but the Vulcans striker was allowed the freedom of the pitch to stroll through on goal and make it 1 – 2. The third followed quickly after when sloppy defending allowed Vulcan in again for 1 – 3. The Striker were at risk of capitulating and strong character was needed. They dug deep and a strong midfield display by Nathan Jackson was rewarded when a dipping shot caught the Vulcan keeper out and found the back of the net. The Strikers kept pressing but the final whistle came too soon to find an equaliser and game finished 2 – 3. Nathan Jackson was awarded the MOM trophy for not only a determined display but for the recognition the Vulcans management gave him for his continued encouragement of his team mates throughout the game. The Glossop management team of Craig and Rick were extremely please with the attitude and commitment of all the players in this match. Next up Waterloo in the quarter final of the Primary Cup. VIVA GNEJ !!! Glossop U9s vrs Reddish Vulcans 13.11.10 - League The Strikers took to the pitch in committed mood but went a goal down following a corner when nobody took responsibility to close the oncoming player down. The rest of the half was a committed and evenly matched display from both teams and halftime score-line of 0 – 1 set up a great second half. Following the break both teams went for it and good attacking and equally great defending made it a tight game. Vulcans 2nd goal of the game came from a mistake by Glossop rather than great play, a ball which should have been shielded to run out of play was kept alive by the deftest of touches by the Strikers player and the Vulcans player was the fastest to react putting in a hopeful ball across into the goal for the oncoming striker to tap in from a yard out. Not to be defeated a change by Glossop bringing on Oliver Crompton started to pay off and good work by Olly created 3 chances that on another day would have yielded goals. It was a fantastic run by Mat Parkes and a switch of play across field that created the best chance. As the ball ping-ponged in the area it fell to Nathan Jackson unmarked but his snap shot went high wide. A great performance by all the players did not get the result they deserved and the game finished 0 – 2. MOM went to Mat Parkes for a box to box display. Next up Reddish Vulcans again…….!!!! The Strikers took to the field in determined mood and without a sub to back the players up they knew it was going to be tough match. This did not phase them and they pressed straight from the first whistle. The scoring should have been opened when good work by Joe Mahon saw the ball cut back to just outside the box but with time to take touch Nathan Jackson choose to hit it first time and put the shot just over the crossbar. With Jacob O’Donnell putting his best performance of the season he continual fed Nathan Jackson down the right and it was following a slick passing move that Nathan’s cross to the back post was poked in by Joe Mahon. Glossop were pressing hard now and it was only a matter of time before the second goal came. A low shot forced the Reddish keeper into a save but he spilled the ball and Jacob O’Donnell followed up to put the ball in for a 2 – 0 halftime score-line. The second half was much the same and the 3rd goal came after a neat switch of play when Jacob made a pass which found Nathan out on the right, a good first touch set the ball neatly in his path to strike a sweet shot low into the far corner. With ten minutes left Glossop looked to be cruising to a comfortable win but a ball which was a 50/50 was not closed down by the Glossop defence and a neat shot pulled a goal back for Reddish. It was just the spur the Strikers needed and produced the best footballing move of the match if not the season. From the kick off the ball was fed to Nathan who passed to Brandon the resulting forward pass found Jacob making a penetrating run into the box and his cut back found Joe Mahon to score his second of the game to finish the match 4 – 1. MOM went to Jacob O’Donnell. Match Reports - October 2010 Due to the selection challenges the Predators took to the field with an untried line up and it took an evenly matched first half of this game for the players to settle and get an understanding. The second half saw Glossop start to gel and start to press for an opening goal only to find an extremely resilient Avros defence in the way. It was a hopeful ball hit forward which cause a mix up in the Avros defence and the ball fell kindly to Ben Matthews out wide on the left. Still with a lot to do a neat first touch set Ben up nicely to strike a sweet shot into the open net with the Avros goalkeeper trying to get back into position. Ben was now bossing the midfield but even his outstanding 2nd half performance could not produce a second goal with the final score-line of 1 – 0 setting up the 2nd game nicely with slim advantage. MOM Ben Matthews. The Strikers only needed to keep a clean sheet to ensure that Glossop progressed in this cup tie. From the first whistle the Strikers pressed hard and following an early attack forced a corner. Nathan Jackson swung the corner in only for it to be defended straight back to him, looking to keep the pressure on his over hit cross was kept in neatly by Mat Parkes who fired it into the danger zone, a yard out Cam Evans was the sharpest and poked the ball into the corner to open the scoring and give an aggregate 2 – 0 to Glossop. The game began to settle down into a good physical battle with some excellent football. Jake Nicoll brought off the outstanding save of the match, 1 on 1 with the Avros striker he stood up tall and smothered the shot. A tough fought 2nd half saw no further goals so Glossop progressed 2 – 0 on aggregate to face Waterloo in the next round. MOM Aiden Lomas. The Strikers match on the other hand end finished with the same score-line but whilst the score was the same as first game the performance was world’s apart. The determination and commitment of each and every player was exceptional. A great move down the right saw Nathan put a good cross in for Jacob to strike first time but slightly high. On the attack again saw Nathan shave the corner of cross bar and post. Marple kept pressing and a wonder strike in the top corner and another a phenomenal finish which was as lucky as it was brilliant put them 0 – 2 at half-time. If ever there was a match where the score-line did not reflect the performance this was it. In a nutshell, 7 attempts on goal all finding the back of the net with 3 contenders for goal of the season. If the Strikers continued with the same drive and commitment results will follow. Jacob O’Donnell and Nathan Jackson put in their best performance of the season and both could have taken the MOM but on this occasion Nathan just edged it in this game. The Striker knew this was going to be hard fought game and would need to be on top of their game. Unfortunately this was going to be hampered by having no substitutes which was going to be felt in the later part of the game. The game was played at a high tempo with strong attacking waves but great defensive work by both sides keeping the shots down to half chances. Jacob O’Donnell carved out 2 opportunities from distance when pressing into the space ahead would have tested the keeper more. Halftime saw a score-line of 0 – 0 against a very strong Dukinfield A side. The second half was more of the same going into the final 10minutes but a great cross into the Glossop saw a fantastic header beat the outstanding Jake Nicoll in the Glossop goal to open the scoring. Glossop pressed for an equaliser but the tempo of the game was telling and a sloppy second goal conceded by the Striker standards recorded a final scoreline of 0 – 2. MOM Oliver Goodwin. Match Reports – September 2010 The Predators started brightly and following a great passing move the ball broke to Cam Evans to sweep the ball pass the keeper. The Pred’s midfield kept the pressure on throughout the first and created a hatful of chances but it was a scrappy bit of play which presented Cam Evans with his and Glossop’s 2nd of the game to make it 2 -0. Going for hat-trick Cam grabbed it just before half time to go in 3 – 0. The second half was much the same as the first with the Pred’s dominating play and it was not long before Archie Harvey scored his first and Glossop’s 4th. A solid performance all round from Alex in net through the defence to the striker saw Glossop round off a great performance with a 5th from Archie Harvey. Final score 5 – 0 MOM Cam Evans. The Strikers has a lot to match upto and it was going well when a slip in defence gifted the opening goal to Cheshire Boys. Not to be dishearten it took only a couple of minutes for Nathan Jackson to lay the ball in for Jack Valentine to make the scores 1-1. Constant pressure from the Strikers released Mat Parkes who coolly lifted the ball over the keeper to make it 2 – 1 and just before half time a strong tackle and probing run into the box saw Nathan Jackson strike a sweet shot which net-megged the keeper to make a half time scoreline of 3 – 1. The Strikers had their confidence back passionate play saw them extend their lead to 4 – 1 when Jacob O’Donnell capitalised on a mistake in the Cheshire Boys defence to tap home from close range. Credit to Cheshire Boys who kept working hard and following a great strike and great save by Jake Nicoll the ball fell kindly to the oncoming Cheshire Striker to pull one back 4 – 2. With the clock running down and Glossop looking to finishing the scoring the ball broke kindly to Jacob O’Donnell in space outside the penalty, the pass in space looked the easy option but Jacob on the half turn struck a sweet right footed shot in the far bottom corner to record his 2nd and the Strikers 5th. Final score 5 -2 MOM Joe Mahon. The Predator went out having had their confidence knocked the week before and it was not long before it began to show. The quickly went 0 – 1 down only for Jack Valentine to pull one back to make it 1 -1. This did little to improve the performance and a further 2 goals conceded saw the Pred’s go in 1 – 3 at half time. A stiff pep talk at half appear to do the trick and the team the performance and commitment improved however against the run of play Curzon broke to 1 – 4. The Pred’s did not let their drop and there efforts were rewarded with 2 quick strikes by Cam Evans to bring the score 4 -3. The Pred’s were in the ascendancy know but too little too late was the cry as the ref blew the whistle for final score line of 3 – 4. MOM Alex Kempley The Strikers had shown great energy and commitment in the first 2 game’s of the season and went into the match with confidence however it was not long before a rash challenge by Glossop and from the resulting free kick the ball sailed into the top corner to make it 0 - 1. It was clear the Strikers just were not up for this game and 2 further goals left them and on wrong end of half time scoreline of 0 -3. Again a stiff pep talk appeared to do the trick at half time with Jacob O’Donnell and Nathan Jackson starting to press from midfield. However the effort of 2 players was not matched by their team mates and the final scoreline of 0 – 5 justified the Strikers performance. MOM Jake Nicoll.
