Dev 10 Mascots

As part of GNE Juniors drive to become more inclusive, the last year has seen the creation of a development Under 10’s team. This team (like all the other development teams has been formed to make sure that players are not lost from the club and also provide a conduit for new players. We have been pleased that some players have not left the club after finding 1st team opportunities limited, and have joined this team. There has also been one or two instances of promotion as well.

After a fantastic pre-season, culminating in a comprehensive 8-3 aggregate victory over Tintwistle the team stepped into the unknown of the Stockport Metro League. The club chose this league because there are no league tables published, and the games are played home and away which adds a sense of adventure over single venue.

Saturday 19th February 2011
Glossop North End 2 - 1 Tintwistle

This fixture is proving to be our best result quite often this season and confidence was high. Today the pitch would be better served as a mud wrestling fixture but us Glossop are made of stern stuff! The team were Isaac in net, defence Luke and Tyler, midfield Ellis, Aiden, Kieran and Matthew. The game started as it would go on with lots of scoring opportunities, Tintwistle decided to bring the game to us which left us the space to breaking through midfield. Our goals were well taken from Kieran and Matthew and we were unlucky that Isaac didn’t get the clean sheet he deserved for some great saves when Tintwistle nicked one back to make it 2-1. On the day we were the better side well played boys!

Man of the match: Matthew

Glossop North End 3 - 0 Tintwistle
The second game saw a team of Isaac, Ben Perkin, Ellis, Tyler, Kian and Harry and after an early save from Isaac showed that Tintwistle again meant business, Glossop charged up field with some great passing moves between Harry, George Valentine and finally Kieran who scored a great goal to open our account 1-0 to Glossop. Great strength in midfield from George earned us a corner which Ellis had a thundering attempt saved .Minutes later Glossop were again charging forward all guns blazing to make another attempt on goal from Ellis which for once the pitch on our side allowed in. Harry went in net Aiden came on and Glossop really took charge of the game with runs and attempts from every direction. Kian completed his comeback with a great run resulting in a well deserved goal to give Glossop a comfortable win!

Man of he match: Kian

Saturday 12th February 2011
Glossop North End 2 - 4 Spurley Hey

The first game saw Isaac in net who was busy within minutes parrying the ball left and right to make numerous saves from a well organised Spurley Hey side who ran Glossop ragged and deserved their goal which came within the first ten minutes .Glossop were made up of Tyler and Ben Pearce in defence with Aiden and Harry midfield and Matthew upfront .Glossop got more organised after the initial shock and held Spurley Hey to this score until half time which showed great resilience on their part as a team. The formation was altered in the break Ben Fitzy came on for Aiden and scored a cracking long range goal to level the score. Ellis came on for Harry and narrowly missed an opportunity before Matthew calmly slotted in a well taken goal to make it 2-1 to Glossop. The pitch conditions were tricky and a scuffle in our box which was difficult to clear resulted in Spurley Hey levelling to make it 2-2. Liam and George Valentine came on and the game was fairly even until Spurley Hey upped their game and Glossop were caught off guard within minutes allowing the opposition space and time to score two more goals. The final score being 4-2. This was unfortunate as Glossop really played well but for a lapse of concentration, team effort is definitely growing and the boys are playing for each other which is great to see and bodes well for the future.

Man of the match: Isaac

Glossop North End 0 - 6 Spurley Hey

The second game saw a mud soaked Isaac back in net with Ben Perkin, Ben Pearce, Kian, Luke and Alex wearing the controversial snood! If it’s good enough for Tevez enough said! The defence for this game struggled against the organised Spurley who also communicated a lot more take note boys! Liam came on and was in fine spirits on his birthday and definitely ran his heart out up the wing a few times being unlucky not to score twice. The pitch was like sinking sand and conditions were difficult in this game the goalkeeper several times unlucky not to save simply by being stuck in the mud. Although we had several efforts saved from Liam and Alex and Ben Fitzy, Spurley took all their chances and the score line got bigger. Harry went in net and made a great save only minutes later to have the ball bounce off him into the net to make it 6, defensively Ben Pearce worked hard and it’s fair to say the pitch worked against us but it’s all experience well done boys for persevering

Man of the match: Ben Pearce

Saturday 15th January
Stockport Metro League Indoor Tournament
This was the boys first indoor tournament and they took a couple of games to get used to the frantic pace , the new rules about being in the area and the general argy bargey of the physicality of some of the teams. However they battled on and were unlucky in a couple of the games not to get better results referee! That said it was a good day out and the boys as usual did their best for Glossop.

8th January 2011 Glossop North End v Cheshire Boys

GNE Tigers 2 V 5 Cheshhire Boys
Our first game of the New Year saw the tigers taking on Cheshire boys always a strong opponent and it was no surprise that our defence comprising Tyler and Ben Pierce were called into action almost immediately. Isaac in goal required to make two saves within minutes. The resulting corner saw a clearance from Ben Fitzy who came back to cover defensively, Glossop needed all hands on deck as Cheshire boys camped out in our half and Isaac’s net was under constant attack but our defence stood firm. In midfield Ben Perkin who captained made some great runs alongside Fitzy and was unlucky to have a shot blocked. Liam playing outfield also played well up the flank and created chances with Ellis also unlucky not to be on the score sheet .But the tide kept coming and a save from Isaac went in off the post to give the visitors their lead. Glossop broke back with shots on target from Ellis saved and A shot from Liam just going wide, but Cheshire caught us napping through the middle and shot their second goal past a diving Isaac. Back up field went Glossop with a run from Capt Ben resulting in a corner which just narrowly missed connecting with a waiting Liam in the box. Aiden came on for Liam. Cheshire launched another attack which saw a kerfuffle in the box and in the midst of flying mud and limbs scored their third to make it 3- 0 at half time. The second half resumed much like the first had it was end to end stuff with Glossop playing some nice passing moves through defence out to Aiden and Ellis who both had chances saved. Tyler was strong in defence with some great blocks but Cheshire again found a way through to make it 4-0, this fired Glossop and we ran at them with shots from Aiden and Liam saved before Tyler passed to Ellis who got us on the score sheet to make it 4-1, minutes later connecting again to make it 4-2 . Glossop never gave up and excellent team work was the order of the day but Cheshire who were rattled temporarily by the comeback managed to get another goal to make the final score 5-2 but credit to the tigers who kept fighting and gave Cheshire a good game - MAN OF THE MATCH ; ELLIS

GNE Lions 3 V 5 Cheshire Boys
The second game saw the lions take on Cheshire with Leon in net and Luke and George Wrall in defence. Glossop took the game to them with a great run from Matthew resulting in a corner that narrowly missed connecting with Kieran. Aiden in midfield ran the length of the pitch first to bolster defence then to support an attack from Glossop; the ball came back into midfield whereupon Matthew dribbled past to score a great goal that tipped the keeper 1-0 to Glossop. Harry in midfield created a chance for Kieran with a good pass which just went wide. Kieran had several chances but was unlucky to be just wide of the mark. Cheshire always a force kept George and Luke busy with some great clearances from them. Leon was called upon to make a good save. The ball went back up field where Harry won it and passed to Aiden who scored a great goal to make it 2-0. Harry had a shot saved Glossop were winning more in midfield which saw great runs from Matthew on the right and Aiden through the middle but Cheshire got one back with some pressure winning them a corner and made it 2-1. Cheshire brought on one of their earlier players to try and win more in midfield as Aiden, Harry, Kieran and Matthew were running the show. This put our defence under more pressure but George and Luke stood firm. Glossop had chances to score more but were off target and a run at our defence saw Cheshire level the score past a diving Leon. A great run at their defence saw a shot just wide from Kieran; Ben Fitz came on for Aiden and promptly ran at their defence and nutmegged the keeper to make it 3-2 Glossop. More shots followed and we kept their keeper busy with shots from Kieran and Ben Fitz. Alex came on for George and was immediately called upon to defend well against further break through form Cheshire. Leon made a great save but minutes later Glossop gave away an own goal to make it 3-3. Cheshire stepped up a gear and though Alex cleared the ball it came straight back in to make it 4-3 Cheshire. Ben Fitz again made a great run to have a shot saved , Cheshire replied with a run that saw our keeper out of his net only for another shot to be fired in which Harry cleared off the line. Minutes later the ball came back in to give another own goal Cheshire made it 5-3. The score didn’t do justice to Glossop who were in the ascendancy for most of the game and with a bit more luck could easily have won. Teams are finding it harder to beat us at home and this is full credit to the team spirit of all the Glossop players. WELL DONE TO ALL OF YOU! - MAN OF THE MATCH; MATTHEW
