Glossop NE ‘Hawks’ 0, Stalybridge Celtic 1
Glossop NE ‘Eagles’ 1, Stalybridge Celtic 1

With the league title out of their grasp, Glossop’s final fixture of the campaign had that end of season feel about it. Needing a point to secure third place they made heavy weather of it, although in the end they should have taken maximum points from both these games.

After a slow start in which Stalybridge had two early chances, the Hawks soon upped their game and went close with three headed chances – two from Charlie Plevin and one from Nathan Wood. However, despite their dominance and slick passing the Stalybridge keeper was never really troubled and at half time the score remained 0-0.

The second half saw Glossop continue to take the game to their opponents, but again despite creating a number of chances they very rarely troubled the keeper.
With a draw looking inevitable Stalybridge broke the deadlock when a flicked header left keeper David Glover rooted to the spot.

A disappointing end to the Hawks season, with three defeats on the trot. However, one bright spot was the performance of man of the match Sam Howbrook who had an outstanding game in defence and looks one to follow next season.

Following on from last week the Eagles gave another sub standard display, although it took a hotly disputed last minute goal to deprive them of victory. After an early Stalybridge chance that was easily saved by keeper David Glover, Glossop started to dominate play, although it wasn’t until the last five minutes of the first of the first half that they created any real chances. Harry Newton hit the post with a long range effort, Lewis Bradley shot wide after great work by Joe Rowlinson and following a interchange of passing between Sam Harding and Joe Crabtree, Lewis Bradley gave Glossop a half time lead.

The second half saw Glossop continue to push forward and it was only the woodwork that denied Luke Chattington’s solo effort a second goal for Glossop. With the last kick of the game Glossop were hit by a sucker punch, despite the ball appearing to have crossed the line, the referee waved play on and the Stalybridge player headed the ball into an empty net.

David Glover and Will Needham were named joint man of the match; Will especially had his best game for a number of weeks.

The squad would like to register their thanks and best wishes to five players who it appears likely will no longer be able to play with them next season. Harry Newton, Joe Rowlinson, Lewis Bradley and Joe Berrington have signed contracts with Stockport County, whilst Sam Harding has joined Wigan Athletic’s Academy. A terrific achievement, for five fantastic lads.

Glossop NE Hawks 3, Reddish Vulcans 4
Glossop NE Eagles 2, Reddish Vulcans 0

A mixed weekend for Glossop with a win and a defeat to Reddish Vulcans. This came as a bit of a shock to Glossop because they had won both games against Reddish only a few weeks earlier.

If ever there was a game of two halves, the match involving the Hawks was it. Trailing 4-0 at half time they stormed back with three second half goals, but just couldn’t find that equalising strike. The first few minutes belonged to Glossop with Charlie Plevin going close on a couple of occasions. However, the wheels soon came off big style. David Glover was left unsighted for the first, a good move ripped Glossop’s defence apart for the second, defensive hesitancy contributed to the third and a lob over keeper Glover saw Reddish with a four goal lead.

Following the ‘hair drier treatment’ at half time Glossop woke up in no uncertain terms and had soon reduced the arrears. A great run and pass by man of the match Joe Clegg picked out Adam Rawcliffe – continuing his run in was on hand to tap the resulting cross into an empty net. Within a couple of minutes Glossop had their second when a Nathan Wood shot was deflected into the net via a Reddish defender. With their tails up Glossop made in three goals in ten minutes when Nathan Wood finished off a flowing team move.
Despite going close on a couple of occasions Glossop just couldn’t make up for their poor first half performance.

The Eagles match was a bit of a one sided affair, although it was far from a first class performance from Glossop. On numerous occasions they played as individuals, often trying to walk the ball into the goal. Both goals came in the first half with Lewis Bradley beating two men and firing into the roof of the net and the second via a Sam Harding penalty.

The second half was memorable for a great one handed save from keeper David Glover, but just as unmemorable for numerous misses by the Glossop forwards.

For another hard working performance, Harry Newton was Glossop’s man of the match.

Glossop NE Hawks 1, Curzon Ashton 3
Glossop NE Eagles 0, Curzon Ashton 1

Glossop hopes of winning this year’s league title disappeared with defeat in both games to a Curzon side that played a more physical game than we had anticipated. Very little football was played in both games and Glossop simply couldn’t adapt to the oppositions tactics.

The Hawks game saw Curzon open the stronger, but it was Glossop who took the lead from their first attack. The ball broke to man of the match Nathan Wood and from a tight angle he produced a great left foot finish. However, Glossop’s joy was short lived, as from the re-start Curzon forced a corner and from the resulting kick the ball went directly into the goal. The game was end to end and when Curzon broke quickly out of defence, keeper David Glover was left stranded and Glossop were behind for the first time in the match. On the stroke of half time Will Howard nearly forced an equaliser, but he was denied by some brave goal keeping.

The second half saw Curzon looking the more determined, but it was Glossop who went nearest to producing the next goal when the opposition keeper sliced a back pass against his own post. In a carbon copy of the second goal, Curzon again broke out of defence and into an unassailable two goal lead. Much as they tried, Glossop just couldn’t find a way back, their best chance being a Jack Clegg free kick that was easily saved.

The Eagles match was a real shock for a number of our players. In what was a disappointing game to watch for the purists, things went from bad to worse for Glossop as midfielder Joe Rowlinson had to leave the pitch after only 7 minutes and a resulting trip to A & E. The only goal of the game came shortly afterwards as Luke Chattington was elbowed to the floor (the referee had a funny idea about a shoulder charge) and Curzon hit Glossop on the break. As in the first game the result was the same and Curzon had that vital goal. Glossop’s best chance of the opening half was a Harry Newton free kick which failed to hit the target.

The chances produced in the second half were all Glossop’s. Luke Chattington set up Lewis Bradley who shot wide, Kassim Highley hooked over and the same player fired wide of the post following a good run and pass from Bradley.

Harry Newton was judged Man of the Match.

Glossop NE ‘Hawks’ 1, Marple Athletic 0
Glossop NE ‘Eagles’ 1, Marple Athletic 0

Glossop retained second place in the league with two hard fought victories against a hard working Marple side.

The Hawks were a little lucky to come away with all the points, after the Marple strikers left their shooting boots at home. Glossop best early chance fell to man of the match Will Howard, but he could only shoot straight at the keeper. However, he soon rectified matters with a great piece of skill – picking the ball up on the right side after a great pass from Will Farrow, he cut inside, beat his man and fired an unstoppable shoot into the top corner. In a carbon copy of the last move Howard again fired another power driver, only on this occasion he hit the woodwork and the ball bounced to safety. Whilst Glossop continued to have the majority of possession, Marple went close to equalising on a couple of occasions, but in both situations the ball went wide of the target from close range.

The second half saw Marple push for an equaliser, but with keeper David Glover producing a couple of great saves and Troy Butler and Jack Clegg marshalling the defence Glossop resistance held firm. At the other end Charlie Plevin had a shot cleared of the line and Adam Rawcliffe saw a shot well saved.

The Eagles game also finished 1-0, but on this occasion it was the Glossop players that left their shooting boots at home with some woeful finishing. From the kick off Glossop pushed forward and Lewis Bradley went close to opening the scoring, but he was denied by an excellent save. However, Glossop didn’t have to wait long to take the lead – picking up a pin point pass from Joe Rowlinson, man of the match Luke Chattington turned his man inside out before cooling lifting the ball over the advancing keeper. Further chances arrived for Glossop, the best of which were via a Chattington header that went wide, a Nathan Wood shot that was saved and a Lewis Bradley effort that hit the bar.

The second half saw Luke Chattington and Joe Rowlinson cause all sorts of trouble for the Marple defence, setting up a number of chances for their teammates, but Lewis Bradley and Joe Crabtree just couldn’t find that killer touch. With substitutes Sam Howbrook and Kassim Highley also going close Glossop will be pleased with the victory, but not the solitary goal victory.

Special mention must go the Harry Newton, who despite playing out of position in defence gave a solid performance, ensuring that keeper David Glover had a trouble free game.

19 March 2011
Glossop NE ‘Hawks’ 2, Reddish Vulcans 0
Glossop NE ‘Eagles’ 3, Reddish Vulcans 1

Glossop maintained their faint hopes of the league title by taking maximum points against Reddish Vulcans.

Glossop started with a new formation 3-1-2 which seemed to unsettle the players. Vulcans opened the stronger with some good passing moves culminating with them clipping the top of the cross-bar. Glossop could not get out of their own half which prompted frantic discussions on the touch-line between Dave and Barry with a change to a more usual and favoured 2-3-1 formation; so much for experimentation!

Glossop immediately upped their game and went close when Jack Clegg’s shot was well saved. Glossop continued to push forward and a great turn and shot by Charlie Plevin saw the ball hit the post and bounce to safety, while Will Howard shrugged of two defenders before shooting narrowly wide.

The second half saw Glossop continue to dominate and within minutes of the restart Adam Rawcliffe had a shot well saved. Almost immediately Rawcliffe turned provider when he beat two men, before setting up a gilt edged chance for Sam Howbrook who somehow managed to miss the target from 5 yards. His movement however to get into a shooting position was excellent and deserved a goal. However Sam soon made up for the miss with a couple of great defensive tackles when Vulcans attacked. Glossop continued to create chances with Charlie Plevin hitting the bar again from close range and a Will Howard shot producing a great one-handed save from the Vulcan’s keeper. Just as it looked like the deadlock wouldn’t be broken, a Will Farrow corner was turned into the net via a Vulcans defender for an own goal and a precious one goal lead for Glossop. Like London buses, the second soon followed – Charlie Plevin set up Sam Howbrook, his shot was well saved, but man of the match Will Howard was on hand to tap in from close range.

Despite the absence of three key players, the Eagles produced some great football, although it took a free kick to open the scoring. Luke Chattington was brought down on the right hand side of the pitch and the usual remonstrations took place as to who was to take the free-kick. Manager Dave, handed the ball to Nathan Wood and he calmly curled the ball into the bottom corner, 1-0 Glossop. Chances continued to fall Glossop’s way with Joe Crabtree heading wide, Joe Rowlinson having a long range shot well saved and both Luke Chattington and Harry Newton seeing close range efforts well blocked. On the stroke of half time Glossop doubled their lead when Joe Rowlinson’s superb ball over the top of the defence found Luke Chattington and he gave the keeper no chance with a well timed shot.

Within minutes of the restart Glossop cruised into a 3-0 lead with man of the match Luke Chattington again on target – a great piece of skill by Kassim Highley released Joe Crabtree whose inch perfect pass found Chattington and he hit the top corner from the edge of the box. With the game safe Glossop made a number of tactical changes, not least in pushing defender Joe Berrington into attack and hoping to see him on the score sheet for the first ever time, whereby releasing £10 from his dad’s wallet. Despite hitting the post and shooting over, the goal just wouldn’t arrive. In fact the opposite happened and Glossop conceded in the last minute, denying keeper David Glover yet another double clean sheet.

12 March 2011
Glossop NE ‘Hawks’ 2, Hough End 2
Glossop NE ‘Eagles’ 1, Hough End 1

The Match was billed as a Title-Decider.

Hough End going into the game 9 points ahead of Glossop but with Glossop having 2 games in hand. Win both and Glossop would be 5 points behind Hough End with 2 games in hand; win them and we could be 1 point behind going into the final four games of the season.

Although they had to settle for two draws, the performances over the majority of both games indicated that Glossop aren’t far off being the best team in the league.

Fair play to Hough End, the first 10 minutes of the Hawks game was probably the best passing and attacking football that we had come up against all season. We were being pulled all over the pitch and we could not intercept nor maintain possession of the ball. In fact within the first 10 minutes, the Hawks conceded two early goals (one an unfortunate own goal) and any title aspirations had been lost.

However the character of the lads then shone through. Their grit and desire to work hard and turn things around was very evident to their Coaches and spectators. They stormed back and took the game to Hough End and will have felt unlucky to not take both points. Just before half time Joe Rowlinson’s cross shot from the right touchline deceived their keeper (and everyone else) and ended in the top corner of the net....”it was a shot, honest” .

This was a great response and the improvement continued into the second half with some excellent football. The second Glossop goal came from a seven ‘one-touch pass and move’ move, starting with keeper David Glover which culminated in a 1-2 between Joe Rowlinson and Will Howard, with Rowlinson then delivering an inch perfect cross to Joe Crabtree who controlled and then buried a shot in the bottom right hand corner. It was a superb move and shows that the drills and hard work demanded by the Coaches on the training pitch, does produce results! The Hawks continued to push forward and despite going close on a number of occasions they just couldn’t find the killer touch. For his outstanding defensive performance, near perfect, Troy Butler was named man of the match.

Again the Eagles will be hugely disappointed not to have come out of their game with maximum points. The Eagles totally outplayed Hough End for the majority of their match.

A new formation was put in place strengthening the midfield positions, where Hough End themselves have quality players; despite some initial resistance from the players the new formation and changes worked extremely well.

The football produced by Glossop was of a very high standard with numerous chances created. Despite taking an early lead through the excellent man of the match Sam Harding, the Eagles just couldn’t find a decisive second. Their approach play was first class, controlled and composed, finishing with quality strikes. The facts were that Glossop hit the cross-bar on FOUR occasions, three by Sam Harding where one goal would have been a minimum anticipated return. Further chances fell to Lewis Bradley, Charlie Plevin and Kass Highley, especially in the last few minutes, but in the end slack marking had cost them dear as Hough End escaped with a draw.

Despite the results and ‘loss of points’ credit has to be given to both Glossop teams who played as teams and produced high tempo, quality, entertaining football. Well done lads!

5 March 2011
Glossop NE ‘Hawks’ 1, 3D Dynamos 2
Glossop NE ‘Eagles’ 2, 3D Dynamos 1
Aggregate 3-3 (3D Dynamos win 3-2 on penalties)

What looked on paper to be a great opportunity for Glossop to progress to the next round of the cup, it turned out to be a nightmare as indiscipline and lethargy came to the fore. However, credit must also go to the 3D keeper who played a blinder in both games.

The Hawks game saw Glossop dominate proceedings, even after they had a defender sent off for retaliation. From the kick off the midfield trio of Joe Rowlinson, Adam Rawcliffe and Luke Chattington combined well on a number of occasions, carving out a number of chances, the best of which fell to Rawcliffe, but he was denied by a point blank save. Just as it looked like it would only be a matter of time before Glossop took the lead, Jack Clegg saw red on 7 minutes and Glossop were immediately on the back foot.

Rather than play for the draw Glossop continued to attack with Charlie Plevin and Joe Rowlinson both going close. The only time keeper David Glover was called into action in the first half, he had his angles spot on and easily saved.

The second half saw Glossop continue to push forward and Luke Chattington was denied by a superb one handed save. With Joe Rowlinson running the centre of midfield and Sam Howbrook looking secure in defence it looked like Glossop would at least go into the second game on level terms. However, in quick succession they were hit twice on the break and on each occasion the ball ended in the back of the net. Despite these set backs Glossop continued in a positive manor and both Joe Rowlinson and Luke Chattington were again denied by excellent saves. With time running out Glossop were given a lifeline when Luke Chattington’s superb header from an Adam Rawcliffe corner, found the back of the net.

Overall, an extremely hard working, determined performance from a team that played the majority of the game a man light.

Although the Eagles won their game and dominated proceedings, the performance seemed a little flat. From the early stages Glossop had all the play with Sam Harding and Harry Newton both having shots well saved, before a Harding shot was pushed onto the post only for the ball to rebound of a defender for an own goal. Despite taking the lead complacency started creeping into the Glossop performance and they nearly paid the price on a couple of occasions. Having said that it was a complete fluke that brought the equaliser, when a speculative shot/clearance dropped over keeper David Glover’s head and into the net.

The second half saw Glossop take the lead within minutes of the restart. Joe Crabtree held off his marker before releasing Will Howard who made no mistake with a well-hit shot. Despite the goal, Glossop only created one other worthwhile attempt in the remainder of the game when Lewis Bradley headed over from close range.

With the scores level Glossop were in a penalty shoot out for the third time this season. Despite Harry Newton and Joe Crabtree finding the net, a couple of misses were decisive and Glossop were out of another cup competition.

Joe Rowlinson and David Glover were Glossop’s man of the matches.
